The film I am planning on creating contains 2 different types of genres: sports and coming of age. Coming of age tales have been around for many generations, however, the first film to be categorized with this theme was the 1955 movie, "Rebel Without A Cause". This film revolves around the plot of a new kid who recently moved to a new school, attempting to start his life on a new slate. He soon finds himself caught up in drama after he is challenged to a drag race with the neighborhood bully, nicknamed "Buzz". After the new kid, Jim, deals with the death of his friend Plato, he starts to mature, and takes responsibility for what goes on in his life, and also seeks a deeper relationship with his parents; one more supportive and full of guidance. this Genre fits into my film idea by how the protagonist accepts the fact that he needs somebody to guide him and teach him-an important step in the maturing process of a teenager.
Sport themed movies have been around from the 1900s, more commonly produced in America. The early 1942 film, "The pride of the Yankees" and even more popular and recent films, like "Creed" have helped to shape this category. This genre of film is usually inspiring and displays a character's journey to be great. For example, we get to see Apollo's journey through hard ships and struggles in his attempt at becoming a great boxer in Creed, and we get to see the real-life path Lou Gehrig took to become a legendary First baseman, before the tragic disease overcame him which took his life. Many early films of this category were made as tributes to real life athletes who deserved greater attention towards their accomplishments. Where this theme is still present, like in the 2016 movie "race" about the life of Jesse Owens, a former track star, it has sort of shifted towards more fiction-based topics, as they are easier to make more dramatic and movie like, I would guess.
