Film idea: An Asian student gets grounded for bad grades by his parents. To regain honor and to become ungrounded, he must win his upcoming spelling bee. The boy then meets a homeless man walking home from school, who unseemingly is smart enough to coach and teach him. The genre of this movie can be categorized into sports, coming of age, and motivational genres.
My name is Ivan Ramcharitar, and for my Media studies project, I chose a topic that can be motivational and helps to breaks stereotypes. I chose this specific genre, as lots of students around me, including myself are transitioning into adults, and must finally learn not to judge a book by it's cover. In the past, some of my judgemental ways have indefinitely been unfair towards others, and also costed me to lose out on opportunities myself.
The movie Shrek is a great example of the theme present in my film idea. The majority of the movie revolves around the basis that Shrek is an ogre, who is misread as evil and monstrous, an he is treated as such before given a real chance to prove his real character. He is then given a chance to save a princess locked in a tower, and proves himself through it. In my film, the raggedy man can be compared to Shrek, as he will be frowned upon at first as someone who is an intellectual superior, but then given a chance to prove that he is worthy, by tutoring the child.Tentative time line for completing project:
